APICS Programs/Certification
Below is a highlight of key APICS programs and certifications to help you better understand which one is right for your needs:

  • Principles of Operations Management: APICS Principles has been developed for those new to operations management, midsized companies working to develop fundamental skills in operations management or large organizations seeking to establish core competencies across teams. The program provides:
> Core knowledge to increase efficiency, reduce redundancy, and improve consistency within an organization
> Foundational skills and the education necessary to begin pursuing an APICS certification
> Opportunities to test understanding of concepts through practice exams and exercises.
  Among the topics presented are inventory management fundamentals, ordering procedures, replenishment policies,
  purchasing management, Just-in-Time and lean methodologies, and inventory performance measurement.

  • Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM): This program is the global standard of expertise for operations professionals. It includes five modules that distill over 50 years of commercial best practices, enabling practitioners to optimize a firm's internal fulfillment processes. Its capstone course, Strategic Management of Resources, is the only graduate level training for strategic and business planning available locally.   • Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP): This program is the global standard of expertise for supply chain professionals. The program includes four modules that cover supply chain management fundamentals, operations planning & logistics, customer & supplier relationship management, and IT in the supply chain.   • Professional Development Workshops: These dynamic workshops focus on the "soft skills" side of operations management. Topics are geared towards improving your personal skill sets, career planning, and high level suply chain management education. Curently offered workshops include:.

Our Instructors
The Instructors at DC Metro make all the difference in our educational programs. Our baseline requirement is that they be certified in the courses they teach. Additionally, our instructors:

  • Receive training in presentation skills and adult learning styles.
  • Have written web courses for Accenture's Supply Chain Academy
  • Have presented at APICS annual and regional conferences, such as Congress for Progress, Seminar One, 6-Packed
  • Retake exams for modules they teach at least once every two years.
  • Maintain a 4.0 (Very Good) or higher ranking based on student evaluations.

Joni Holeman, CFPIM, CIRM, CSCP

Joni has over 25 years of planning, materials management and manufacturing experience in businesses ranging from custom lighting, value engineering, electronics and remanufacturing. Every point along her career path prepared her for the concepts she now teaches at APICS DC Metro.

Joni is also President of Affirmation Training Inc., an operations and supply chain best practice training provider placing special emphasis on human potential principles.

An obsessive compulsive volunteer, Joni is a Past President of the DC Metro APICS Chapter and currently serves as VP of Education. An avid believer in Chapter development, she coaches nonprofits on how to successfully sell their invisible services. Joni writes online and instructor-led curricula, develops interactive Workshops and is a frequent conference speaker.
Angela Long, CSCP

Angela joined APICS in 2010 and is the newest member of our teaching team. She focuses on CSCP and the customer side of Supply Chain. She has a background in marketing communications and focuses on effective response to customer needs.

Angela holds an MS in Management from Boston University and a BA from Converse College. Angela is also the Editor of DC Metro News.
Irvin Varkonyi, CSCP, PLog

Irv has been teaching with APICS since 2007. He specializes in CSCP and has developed courseware in Supply Chain Resilience and Preparedness and Cargo Security Management. He teaches online regularly as an adjunct professor with the American Public University's School of Management. When not teaching APICS courses, you can find him at George Mason University's School of Public Policy where he teaches a popular course in Transportation Security.

Irv is also President of Supply Chain Operations Preparedness Education (SCOPE), a firm offering training and consulting in organizational preparedness for private and public sector organizations.

Irv holds an MBA from The Thunderbird Global School of Management and a BA from Clark University

MARYANNE ROSS, CFPIM, CIRM, CSCP

Maryanne is an international trainer, speaker and instructor specializing in Operations and Supply Chain Management. She has engaged and trained several thousand participants, working for clients such as Exxon Mobil, AOL, Merck, DuPont, NAVAIR, Northrop Grumman, GE Fanuc, and Volvo. She has a passion for teaching and speaking on other topics, including leadership development, motivation, goal setting, personal empowerment, and team building. 

Maryanne has been a member of APICS since 1989 and a full time trainer since October 2001.  She is recognized through the APICS Instructor Development Program as a Master Instructor for CPIM and CSCP and a Lead for Lean Enterprise, Global Sourcing, and Associate for Instructor Training. She has developed interactive exercises to enhance the entire suite of APICS Fundamentals and CPIM review courses and has been instrumental in creating activities and enhancements for the CSCP modules.

In addition to Congress for Progress, Seminar 1, APICS International Conferences, APICS Leadership Institutes, and at many District and Chapter events, Maryanne has developed numerous workshops including Lean for Office and Lean for Warehousing and owns her own training company, Mental Apparel, Inc. She is a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Leadership Development course and the Jack Canfield Breakthrough to Success Program, and a trained facilitator of the Covey Speed of Trust workshops.
